Kayaking with the Manatees January 10, 2014
As we started off around the island we got to see the Cousins of the Rails, a Purple Gallinule, Coot and Common Moorhen all together, feeding on the Spadderdock, less that a foot from each other. Then the 6 Turkeys showed off for us. The Great Blue Herons are starting to sit on their nests now and the Anhingas are starting to pair up. The Male and Female are so pretty in contrast to each other and it's a nice sight to see them together. Up above there were two Red-shouldered Hawks raising cain and the Great Egrets, Snowy and Cattle Egrets and Little Blue Herons were also out fishing. There were lots of Manatees coming and going as they must come out into the main river to feed. There were a few Red-bellied Turtles and 2 little 2 foot Alligators sunning on Snake Creek and back to the Manatees spot we experienced several encounters. Such gentle giants, we're glad to have them here as our Winter guests.
